Ở môi trường Việt Nam gần như chưa có trường lớp chính thức nào dạy kể chuyện bằng ảnh nên tôi rất biết ơn những gì đã học được từ Wubin. Mọi kiến thức đã được hệ thống hóa một cách dễ hiểu và khúc chiết. Nhờ workshop này mà tôi biết nhiếp ảnh không chỉ dừng lại ở một công cụ ghi chép thông thường bằng hình ảnh mà qua đó còn có thể biểu hiện được nhiều tâm tư và suy nghĩ của người thực hành. Wubin đã chuẩn bị các slide bài giảng rất kĩ lưỡng, tôi nghĩ nó không khác so với những gì mình từng được học ở các giảng đường đại học, thậm chí còn nhiều hơn thế. Tôi vẫn luôn ấn tượng với sự chuyên nghiệp của Wubin trong cách làm việc và truyền đạt kiến thức, lần này không phải ngoại lệ. By the time I participated in Zhuang Wubin’s Photo Editing Workshop in Manila in 2017, I had already amassed a deep pool of photographs from several years of shooting in the streets of Singapore and The Philippines. I thought, I had to get these published or exhibited. They can’t just be sitting on my hard drives or be random posts in my social media accounts. But, I had very little knowledge on how to organise them and pick the right photographs to weave a cohesive picture narrative.

The workshop afforded me that knowledge I lacked, and more.

Of course, pinaka-paborito ko sa workshop ay yung 5-picture edit. Kase, parang yun ang pinaka-pagsisimulan mo para magkaroon ka ng kwento. Yun ang pinaka-puso ng edits mo. Without it, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by a pool of photographs and you wouldn’t know where to start. Ang maganda pa dito sa 5-picture edit, lalo na nung nag-hands-on kami editing other participants’ work is madi-discover mo that there are really many ways to edit and/or sequence your work depending on your intended mode of delivery. Challenging pero, fulfilling kapag nakabuo ka. Kahit sa social media posts ko lang ngayon, ina-apply ko yung approach na ‘to.

In the years after this workshop, I was able to self-publish several photo zines, participated in group exhibitions and had my edited work published in local and international publications. I have since been conducting my own Street Photography Workshops and I have been including an introduction of the 5-picture edit in them, which is very much appreciated by my students.

Bio

Zhuang Wubin is a writer who makes photographs, publications and exhibitions. He received his PhD by Published Work (Research–Photography) from University of Westminster, London.

Zhuang is a recipient of the Prince Claus Fund research grant (2010) and a Lee Kong Chian research fellow at the National Library Board (NLB) of Singapore (Dec 2017 to Jun 2018). He is the major grantee of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Greater China Research Grant 2018. He is also the contributing curator of Chiang Mai Photo Festival (2015, 2017, 2020).

Published by NUS Press, Photography in Southeast Asia: A Survey (2016) is his fourth book. The Chinese translation is published in 2019 by VOP BOOKS, Taipei.

Zhuang is the photo editor of the following photobooks: Sean Lee's Young Love (2022) and Shauna (2014), Ore Huiying's We Were Farmers (2021), Utami Dewi Godjali's Samana (2019) and Dilla Djalil-Daniel's A Trunk and Other Tails (2017).

Zhuang has taught subjects relating to photography at Singapore Management University (2021), Chiang Mai University (2015) and Nanyang Academy of Fine Art (2012-14). He has initiated photo workshops across Southeast Asia and Hong Kong since 2008.
